Treasuring a Transgender Child

presenter October 14, 2018 11:15am

Lisa Brennan

Lisa Brennan is the proud daughter of a UCC pastor, married to her husband for 30 years. In January of 2018, Lisa started a new chapter of life, as her youngest child shared with the family that she is a transgender woman. After some adjustment, the Brennan family has found that when you treasure someone for who they are, it is magical and sacred. Lisa wrote a beginner’s guidebook for family and friends, and to her surprise it was widely shared, with several groups asking her to share her story.

Learning about Gender and Sexuality

October 21 11:15 am Autumn Dennis, presenter,

In this session, we will be sharing our stories and experiences of how we “know” our gender and sexuality. We will discuss how gender and sexuality are different, various key terms that are helpful to know, and will discuss how to use neutral pronouns in conversation.

Open and Affirming Celebration

On April 27, 2008 Parkway United Church of Christ joined nine other UCC churches in the area to become Open and Affirming. As that yearlong process came to an end, the committee published an A.A. Milne quote from Winnie the Pooh book.

“Have we reached the end?”

“Yes, I suppose it seems so… and yet,”

“Yes, Piglet?”

“It is also the beginning.”

Let’s now keep the faith and continue the conversation for human justice with our 10th anniversary of that vote which coincides with the 180th Anniversary of our church. The Team for 180th Anniversary of Parkway UCC and 10th anniversary for ONA consists of Greg Schmelig, Gale Haggard, Polly Winkelmann, Barb Eggebrecht, Kevin Cameron, Harold and Carol Cobb.

It is heartwarming when we find out we are making a difference. We received this wonderful email about our outdoor sign and have to share with everyone:

I drive past your signs every morning on my way to work. The words you put on your board are things that make you smile, think and nod in agreement.

I’m not religious and I stay away from churches because, well as a lesbian woman I am not typically welcome.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw your board… It was right after they legalized gay marriage. I saw your board, “We believe in Marriage, equality, and marriage equality.” I was beaming after that. It was nice to see religious organizations standing by our side.

The one you have on display now is just amazing. Even if I’m having a bad morning, this always puts a smile on my face. Such powerful words.

I’m sure it’s not the most popular board in town, but it certainly the one with the most truth. I just wanted to say thank you.
