Worship with Us this Sunday!

Join us this weekend on the sixth Sunday of Lent = Palm Sunday

at 9:30am Traditional Worship and/or 11:00am Informal Worship where will start in the Gathering Space and process with palms into the sanctuary as the crowd did on that day when Jesus came into Jerusalem. As they waved palms and threw cloaks/garments on the ground to become a red carpet of welcome and honor for Jesus, we are asking you to bring a new shirt/blouse/sweater to spread on the ground (more directions upon arrival this Sunday)

[Note: the clothing will be donated to folks in need next week.]

Our scriptures will be Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 and Matthew 21:1-11 with a sermon entitled From Lovers to Fools with our Heads. We have a great deal to ponder today as we transition from Lent into Holy Week. How much can we grasp? What makes sense to us and what is foolish, unbelievable, unwanted?

We will extinguish our sixth Lenten candle as we move further into Lent and closer to the (temporary but deep) darkness of Good Friday and the tomb.

We will hear more about our mission partners this 2nd Mile Lent/Easter …. Unleashing Potential (formerly Neighborhood Houses), Heifer Project, Lydia’s House and Eden Seminary.

Morning and evening worship/events/opportunities each day. Details…

Vitality – Start Your Engines!
Sunday, April 8 | 10:00am
John Wimberly, our Vitality Consultant, will be back with us the weekend after Easter as we select and prioritize from our huge range of strategies you have suggested since our super session in late January and at our commission and committee meetings since then. These strategizes will help us live further into our new purpose statement! Please plan to be with us on Sunday, April 8 for our One Family Worship at 10am followed by a meal and strategizing!

We are so excited to let you know that Parkway will be magnifying a compassionate and progressive Christian voice by hosting author John Pavlovitz on the first weekend of June! It’s our Annual Meeting weekend and a Communion Sunday – the perfect time to celebrate our Open Table and to think more about our renewed purpose statement and strategies in our Vitality Adventure.

John was recently at Central UCC in Jefferson City, MO. Several PUCCers were there last Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday to experience his leadership and call to love like Jesus. They came back pumped and fired up for our own planning!

As we move forward with our visioning for this time with John, please consider reading his book, A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, and Hopeful Spiritual Community – which will be at the core of one of his presentations at Parkway.

Please add a note to your calendar for the first weekend of June now, because you’ll want to be part of this! Trust us! The weekend will have many facets-an event for PUCC in particular, an event for the community, an event for area youth!?

Humor

The Bishop visits local parish and asks a class of little kids, “What is Easter?” First kid says, “That’s when we eat turkey and watch football.” “No,” says the bishop, “That’s Thanksgiving.” Next kid, ” It’s when get presents and put up a tree and a manger scene.” “Nope, that’s Christmas,” replies the bishop. The local priest is getting embarrassed now and suggests the bishop call on the star pupil. The bishop does so and the kid comes through for the priest. “Easter is when we celebrate Jesus coming out of the tomb alive.” The bishop smiles her wide and wonderful smile and the priest let’s out a sigh of relief. Her class is learning something after all. But then the star pupil continues. “And if Jesus sees his shadow, he goes back in and we have six more weeks of winter.”

Eliot Unitarian Chapel,
100 S. Taylor, Kirkwood

Worship with Us this Sunday!

Join us this Sunday, the second Sunday of Lent, for Traditional Worship at 9:30am and/or Informal Worship at 11:00am where our scripture lessons will be Psalm 22:23-31; and Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 with a sermon entitled From Lovers to Fools with our Ears. What Bible stories from the Hebrew Bible do you think may have been important and influential to Jesus as he was growing up? As you look at your life and the life of our faith community, what stories of the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels shine through?

We will light our Lenten candles and hear about Heifer Project, one of our 2nd Mile Lent/Easter mission partners.

We also welcome new members at our 9:30 service.

The Sustainability Seekers are selling coffee and chocolate again after both services. Profits go towards fund raising towards a dishwasher and mugs for the coffee hour.  Even if you don’t need anything this week, please stop by their table to let them know your preferences for future orders.

Sing with us Sunday at noonish!
The Core Music Project Team has been at work for many moons-whistling while we work…meandering through melodies, humming harmonies, looking at lyrics, mindful of memories, daring to dream. Please join us for a light lunch and lots of singing on Sunday, February 25th at noon. We will share some of our process and progress with you. We’re eager to share this with you and to hear your voice!

CANstruction “field trip” 3/11
Sunday, March 11 * 2:00 * Saint Louis Science Center * Questions or carpooling interest? ask Lisa Mason (lmason624@sbcglobal.net)

CANstruction is a mural created with canned goods to create an image of interfaith cooperation. This mural is assembled by local high school teens (including some PUCCers) representing, Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Hindu faiths. Youth rotate through stations that include mural assembly, team building skills (led by Saint Louis Science Center’s YES teens), and interfaith interaction. As part of the interfaith interaction, teens are asked to bring quotes from their sacred text around shared values concepts.

“Beyond Ourselves” is the theme for this year’s CANstruction, drawing inspiration from a new statue outside of the Planetarium of a figure of a person looking up, inspiring us to think of what is beyond. This year will mark the fifth year of a partnership between The Saint Louis Science Center,

The Center for Indian Cultural Education- Bal Vihar, and Interfaith Quest to create an interfaith CANstruction.

Teens will lead us through exploring what the represented sacred texts say about thinking “Beyond Ourselves,” and how they were impacted in the sharing of each others sacred texts. The CANstruction will be on display through the month of March, then all canned goods used in the mural will be donated to Operation Food Search.

PUCC is taking a “field trip” to see the completed CANstruction mural and a video about the collaborative process. On Sunday, March 11, we will meet at the bridge of the Saint Louis Science Center at 2:00pm for our interfaith tour. Enter on the Planetarium side. The tour will be led by Beth Damsgaard-Rodriguez of Interfaith Quest.

As always, you are encouraged to bring friends and neighbors! Please let Lisa Mason know if you plan to attend, and whether you are interested in carpooling from PUCC.

Inspiration

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”  ~C.S. Lewis
