And at this sound [of the holy Spirit] the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. – Acts 2:6

Have your ever been at an event and your attention is drawn over and over again to the person over on the side who is translating the speech in sign language? Amazing! If you are like me, you may have gotten lost from the verbal and found yourself mesmerized by the hands. All languages fascinate me.

Artist and TED* Fellow Christine Sun Kim was born deaf, and she was taught to believe that sound wasn’t a part of her life, that it was a hearing person’s thing. Through her art, she discovered similarities between American Sign Language and music, and she realized that sound doesn’t have to be known solely through the ears — it can be felt, seen and experienced as an idea. In this endearing talk, she invites us to open our eyes and ears and participate in the rich treasure of visual language.

*TED = TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

[An aside: I am so encouraged to know that the Parkway School District will begin offering a class in Sign Language at the middle school level next year!]

Prayer: Holy One, we are hungry and thirsty to learn from one another. Help us to reach out with an openness and willingness to grow. Amen.
