As we celebrate this season of gratitude and Thanksgiving, PUCC will join with Shaare Emeth again this year to support a family of new Americans. A few members of Shaare Emeth’s New American Committee and the Jewish Council for New Americans (JCNA) have partnered with a family since their arrival in St. Louis on June 13, 2018. The family consists of a mother, Apendeki, and her five sons and one daughter, ranging in age from 16 to almost two years old. Apendeki is originally Congolese but had been living in a refugee camp in Tanzania since 2006.

The International Institute’s assistance primarily focuses on the first 90 days after arrival. Having passed that timeframe, the mother is struggling to support her large family and is still in need of significant financial assistance. The family primarily speaks Swahili and language barriers are further complicating their transition. Together with our friends at Shaare Emeth, we will collect funds to be distributed for future rent and utility payments, grocery gift cards, shoes, and some apparel. The JCNA will help the family budget and manage the resources.

A Sign Up Genius detailing the needs is now launched! Please use Sign Up Genius Bit.ly/2z1NR65 to “claim” any item you would like to donate so we can coordinate and avoid duplication between our congregations. Please place your donations in the Gathering Space. Please make any checks payable to Shaare Emeth with a note on the memo line to direct the donation toward rent, utilities, or grocery cards. We will conclude the collection December 10. Thank you for your generosity in welcoming this family.
