Join us, AWOL—Adventurous Women Out Late, for an old movie on the Big Screen! On the eve of Tracy Samantha Lord’s (Hepburn) wedding, her blue-blood ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), returns. C.K. discovered that a national tabloid plans to do an expose on Tracy’s philandering father and has agreed to smuggle a reporter (James Stewart) into her wedding if the magazine kills the story on the elder Lord. But C.K. never expects that the woman he still loves will suddenly fall for the undercover reporter. Now, before the evening is over, Tracy will be forced to take an unflinching look at herself and to realize which of these three men she truly loves.

AWOL will travel to the fabulous FOX on March 31 to see The Color Purple. Tickets are approximately $50. RSVP Carmen Bumgarner cfbum@charter.net; 314-330-0813 by Feb 25.

The Broadway production debuted at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in October 2014 and closed in September 2016. It won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, 2015 Outer Critics Circle Award Outstanding New Broadway Play, the 2015 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play, and the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play.

The story concerns a mystery surrounding the death of a neighbor’s dog that is investigated by young Christopher Boone, who has an autism spectrum condition, and his relationships with his parents and school mentor. The play reworked the source material by changing its voice and presenting the story as a play-within-a-play. The play has received a generally warm reception, with most critics impressed by its ability to convey the point of view of the young protagonist and the compassion of his school mentor.

AWOL to see Hidden Figures 1/14

AWOL (Adventurous Women Out Late) to see Hidden Figures

Sat, Jan 14 | Carpool from church 6:30pm or meet at theater (TBA).

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the true life stories of three of these women, “human computers,” we follow them as they rose the ranks of NASA specifically tasked with calculating the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and his safe return. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

Steel Magnolias is the poignant story of a close-knit group of deeply-Southern women. The talk of the town is the upcoming wedding of Shelby, the beautiful and fragile daughter of M’Lynn, an intelligent, compassionate career woman.  Truvy owns the beauty parlor which is the female epicenter of the town. Regular customers keep the banter and bickering going as the group gathers each week at Truvy’s. It’s here that they find comfort and strength in each other while they discuss relationships and loneliness, happiness and loss. A heartwarming, hilarious, and bitter-sweet story about the special bond that enables these women to find their ways past life’s obstacles using humor, compassion, love…and a lot of hairspray.
