Children

We love children! We delight in them even when they aren’t miniature adults behaving perfectly in worship. We are devoted to compassionate, safe and fun care for your child.

During Sunday worship we provide the following:

Pathways of Faith 9:45am-10:45am

Children attend about the first 15 minutes of the 9:30 worship service, participate in the Children's Message, and then move to our Rotation Sunday School – Pathways of Faith.

Grace Place 10:45am-11:00am

A Children's Friendship Time with toys, fun, and good company. Adult supervised, of course! (Held in Fellowship Hall)

Stories and Songs 11:15am-11:45am

Children attend about the first 15 minutes of the 11:00 service, participate in the Children's Message, and then move to Sunday School – Stories and Songs. They come back for the Shalom Circle and final blessing in the sanctuary.

Believing that each child has unique, God-given abilities and that each child learns in different kinds of ways, we employ a rotation model of Sunday School during this time with our children between the Kindergarten and the 5th grade. Believing that practices, symbols, and pictures are important vehicles for forming the faith, we currently use the “We Believe” Curriculum (Presbyterian Church USA) with those who are Preschool age (4 and 5 years old). Our Middle (6th and 7th) and High School (8th- 12th) youth have Sunday School classes during this hour (the Middle High explore and test their beliefs using the “Connect” Curriculum and our High School critically examine and reflect upon their faith using “LinC” Curriculum-both come from Cokesbury).

Holy Week 2017

Palm Sunday: April 9 | 9:30 & 11:00am
Feel the excitement as Jesus comes into Jerusalem. Wave your palm, listen to scripture that sets the scene for the week, receive the sacrament of communion at our open table. As Jesus enters in, how will we welcome and spend time with him this Holy Week—so that we can become more like him?

Maundy Thursday Service: April 13 | 7:00pm
Join us in the Gathering Space for a simple soup supper as we hear about the Passover that Jesus and the disciples were in the city to celebrate. We will ask God to let some of this Holy Week pass us by. Gather at our open table to receive the incredible gift of communion—which will sustain us in these next days of challenge.

Good Friday Prayers: April 14 | noon | Historic Sanctuary
Enter into the heaviness on this day of trial, tribulation, crucifixion. The organ will play and we will observe some silence. We will hear scripture and poetry and reflect on this last day.

Good Friday Service: April 14 | 7:00pm | New Sanctuary
Absorbing Even This! We will imagine the unthinkable and come out on the other side. On the darkest night, we will remind ourselves of the depths of God’s love for us. The Choir and Voices of Grace will sing and we will be aware of light and shadow tonight.

Easter Prayer Vigil: April 14 | Good Friday through Easter Sunrise!
Please sign up to be in prayer for at least one of the 36 hours at your home—not at church. Devotion materials will be available in the Gathering Space or on our website (parkwayucc.org). There are a great deal of helps in this booklet—even activities and discussion starters for families with children/youth. Please make a plan—which may include a walk through the Devotion booklet—so you can hit the ground running when your specific time rolls around.

Easter Sunrise Service: April 16 | 6:00am | Elm Lawn Cemetery
(Behind the Historic Sanctuary across the street)
Gathering in the darkness like the women did long, long ago, we will be literally warmed and encouraged by the “new fire.” The Day of Resurrection will dawn on us as we see the empty tomb and decide for ourselves what we’ll do next.

Easter Worship: April 16 | 9:30 Traditional & 11:00am Informal
Lilies all around, snuffed Lenten candles now ablaze again, fresh flowers being placed in the cross, stirring music in the air, eager kids everywhere you look…Come celebrate the most important day of the year! We will experience the turning and returning of Mary and a couple of the disciples at the tomb. It has been a season of deepening our Christ-like identity. Lean in toward God! [Special Easter activities for the kids during worship—Easter Egg Hunt after both services.]
