Jesus said, ‘In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, “Grant me justice against my opponent.” – Luke 18:2-3

Here is the index of a new book of adult Bible studies by Walter Brueggemann entitled Interrupting Silence: God’s Command to Speak Out. Rev. Dr. Brueggemann is a UCC pastor and former professor at Eden Seminary here in St Louis.

1. The Oppressed Break Silence – Exodus 2:23
2. Prophets Refuse to Be Silenced – Amos 7:13
3. Silence Kills – Psalm 32:3, 5
4. Jesus Was Rudely Interrupted – Mark 7:28
5. Casting Out Silence – Mark 9:17-18
6. The Crowd as Silencer – Mark 10:47-48
7. Truth Speaks to Power – Luke 18:2-3
8. The Church as a Silencing Institution – 1Corinthians 14:33-35

Silence is a complex matter. It can refer to awe before unutterable holiness, but it can also refer to the coercion where some voices are silenced in the interest of control by the dominant voices. It is the latter silence that Walter Brueggemann explores, urging us to speak up in situations of injustice.

The Bible is filled with stories where marginalized people break repressive silence and speak against it. Examining how maintaining silence allows the powerful to keep control, this timely group study book motivates readers to consider situations where they need to interrupt silence, convincing us that God is active and wanting us to act for justice.

Check out this excerpt that aligns with us as we focus on our voice this week:

Prayer: Holy One, be with me as I discern when and how to speak out.   Amen.
