Adult Choir

Directed by Barbara Raedeke

Parkway’s Adult Choir provides musical leadership for the 9:30 Traditional Worship Service. The choir season runs from September to June, and our rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. On Sunday mornings we meet at 8:45 to warm up before the worship service. [Click on the titles to view the expanded posts.]

We sing music drawn from a variety of sources—the classical sacred repertory, spirituals, gospel music, folk song, and chant. We invite anyone who enjoys singing to join us.

We’re a congenial group, and you will be most welcome! Childcare is provided during both the Wednesday evening and Sunday morning rehearsals.

If you would like to sing with us, please contact us. We will be delighted to have you join us!

Give in to your Inner Diva! Ten Reasons to Join Parkway’s Choir

  1. Flexibility and convenience: We practice Wednesday nights 6:30-8:00pm, but choir is forgiving if you need to take a night off. Plus there is child care! Or Youth Night. Wow! How ’bout that, you parents. (Parents of youths can save gas by hanging out and singing instead of making two round trips.) We also take the summer off!
  2. Premium Parking: Because we meet at 8:45am for practice before 9:30am service, choir members always can get front row parking.
  3. Professional: Parkway has a wonderful professional choir director—we are made familiar with a wide variety of worship music and learn lots about ensemble singing. She knows so much. And never wastes our t
  4. Expand your prayer life: Did you know “He/she who sings in church prays twice!”
  5. Increase your Bible knowledge: Learning Church music is Bible Study. Psalms, hymns, OT, NT, etc. and Spirituals. (my personal faves.)
  6. No dress code: We wear robes, so you can come to church in PJs if you want and no one will know.
  7. Laugh with us: We have a wonderful group of comedians, mostly tenors, but all voices can play. Much laughter before and after (never during) our work on our music. Choir is fun.
  8. We are family: The choir is a special Christian community within a community. We have love, love, love. Almost always.
  9. We need you: Several of our key voices and their owners are in England for several months—we need more singers.
  10. All are welcome: There are no auditions and no critics. Any gift is welcome. Come join and help us scatter joy.

Singing can have some of the same effects as exercise, like the release of endorphins, which gives the singer an overall “lifted” feeling and is associated with stress reduction. It’s also an aerobic activity, meaning it gets more oxygen into the blood for better circulation, which tends to promote a good mood. And singing necessitates deep breathing, another anxiety reducer.

Every year in September when the choir returns to our 9:30 service, I invariably hear many people say how great it is to have them back. I agree! I miss them over the summer, and I think everyone else does too. They provide a very important ministry as they sing hymns and anthems which enrich our understanding of the Scriptures and move us as only music can.

Have you ever thought about joining our ranks? If you enjoy singing, we would love to have you sing with us. The choir is a warm and welcoming group—we work hard, have fun, and enjoy making music together. Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m., and we sing for the 9:30 worship service on Sundays, with a warm up at 8:45. Child care is provided on Wednesday evenings and before the service on Sundays. This fall our rehearsals begin on Wednesday, August 27, and we will sing for the 9:30 worship services beginning on Sunday, September 7. We very much need additional singers! If you would like to join us, please contact Barbara Raedeke at BRaedeke@aol.com, or just come to the first rehearsal on August 27. You will be most welcome!

Glorifying God through Music

Barbara Raedeke

In my capacity as organist and choir director it is my privilege to provide music for the 9:30 worship service.  I prepare and perform organ music and also accompany many of our talented members, both youth and adults, who sing or play instruments.  I also direct the adult choir, which rehearses on Wednesday evenings and performs music in a variety of styles—selections from the classical choral repertory, music from the Taizé and Iona communities, as well as folk music of many different cultures.  The choir is a warm and welcoming group, and we always invite new members to join us. Child care is provided on Wednesday evenings and on Sunday mornings during our pre-service warm-up. We extend a special invitation to both members and non-members who are not able to sing on a regular basis to join us for special music at Christmas and Easter.

In addition to my work with choir and instrumentalists, much of my time is spent in worship planning—working with Pastor Kevin to select hymns, anthems, and other music to fit the worship theme and lectionary texts.

Youth in Middle School and High School have the opportunity to sing with Voices of Grace, ably led by Cynthia Bowermaster and Stephanie Polster, which rehearses on Sunday mornings from 10:45-11:30, and sings approximately once a month at either the 9:30 or 11:00 service.

This fall our member Roger Fagerberg has begun two new instrumental groups—an orchestra and a chimes choir—which rehearse once a month on Sunday evenings.

There are many opportunities to glorify God through music at Parkway, and we warmly invite all with musical interests and abilities, both youth and adults, to participate.  Please contact Barbara Raedeke at braedeke@aol.com if you have an interest in the adult choir or in playing an instrument for worship.  Those interested in singing with Voices of Grace may contact Cynthia Bowermaster, cyntod7@sbcglobal.net , or Stephanie Polster, stephpolster@charter.net.  Anyone interested in participating in the chimes choir or orchestra may contact Roger Fagerberg, rogerlaw@swbell.net.
