We have wonderful music at Parkway. From the the great canon of western music, the classical sacred repertory, chant, gospel and folk to contemporary songs and global influences, there is something for everyone here. We are blessed to have Barbara Raedeke, accomplished organist and director of the Adult Choir. We enjoy participation from St. Louis Symphony musicians in our congregation and several talented youth and adults. We also periodically bring in local groups to provide special music and/or to lead our informal worship service. Join us and engage in hearing, singing or playing music that inspires, comforts and energizes your faith. [Scroll down to view older posts.]

Sunday, December 8 | 2:00pm | Parkway UCC

An all-new production of Follow That Star: A Jazz Nativity will be presented at Parkway UCC and two other area United Church of Christ settings. The concert program, produced by Cliff Aerie and Oîkos Productions offers a contemporary retelling of the Christmas story through jazz, America’s original art form.

The music of the Oîkos Ensemble will feature guest vocalist Kim Fuller. Kim has captivated St. Louis audiences for more than 30 years with a vocal style reminiscent of Nancy Wilson and Dinah Washington. She is currently the vocalist for the renowned Jazz Story presented by the Shelton Concert Series. Kim has been the opening act for jazz greats Ramsey Lewis, the Jazz Crusaders and Smokey Robinson. “I’m thrilled to be invited to sing at this year’s jazz nativity,” she says. You too will be thrilled by Kim’s clear voice and contagious spirit.

The Oîkos Ensemble is a national jazz ministry under the direction of saxophonist, the Rev. Cliff Aerie. The band includes St. Louis musicians: Arianna Aerie (voice), Daniel Campbell (trumpet), Carolbeth True (piano), Dave Troncoso (bass), and Kevin Gianino (drums). The story of Christmas will be “re-imagined” through the storytelling of two on-the-scene angels portrayed by actors Marsha Cann and Larissa Forsythe.

Jazz Nativity is pleased to announce its partnership with the Deaconess Foundation. Providing assistance to many local organizations, the Deaconess Foundation helps to insure essential services to children, youth and families in need. Through the generous sponsorship of Deaconess and the financial support of our host churches and donors, all performances of Follow That Star are free to the public.

In the spirit of Christmas giving, a free-will offering will be received at each performance to benefit local charities.  Concertgoers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to help restock the shelves of area food pantries.

No reservations are required, and ample parking is available at each church location.. For additional information visit: http://www.missourimidsouth.org/#!jazz-nativity-follow-that-star/c2fb

Glorifying God through Music

Glorifying God through Music

Barbara Raedeke

In my capacity as organist and choir director it is my privilege to provide music for the 9:30 worship service.  I prepare and perform organ music and also accompany many of our talented members, both youth and adults, who sing or play instruments.  I also direct the adult choir, which rehearses on Wednesday evenings and performs music in a variety of styles—selections from the classical choral repertory, music from the Taizé and Iona communities, as well as folk music of many different cultures.  The choir is a warm and welcoming group, and we always invite new members to join us. Child care is provided on Wednesday evenings and on Sunday mornings during our pre-service warm-up. We extend a special invitation to both members and non-members who are not able to sing on a regular basis to join us for special music at Christmas and Easter.

In addition to my work with choir and instrumentalists, much of my time is spent in worship planning—working with Pastor Kevin to select hymns, anthems, and other music to fit the worship theme and lectionary texts.

Youth in Middle School and High School have the opportunity to sing with Voices of Grace, ably led by Cynthia Bowermaster and Stephanie Polster, which rehearses on Sunday mornings from 10:45-11:30, and sings approximately once a month at either the 9:30 or 11:00 service.

This fall our member Roger Fagerberg has begun two new instrumental groups—an orchestra and a chimes choir—which rehearse once a month on Sunday evenings.

There are many opportunities to glorify God through music at Parkway, and we warmly invite all with musical interests and abilities, both youth and adults, to participate.  Please contact Barbara Raedeke at braedeke@aol.com if you have an interest in the adult choir or in playing an instrument for worship.  Those interested in singing with Voices of Grace may contact Cynthia Bowermaster, cyntod7@sbcglobal.net , or Stephanie Polster, stephpolster@charter.net.  Anyone interested in participating in the chimes choir or orchestra may contact Roger Fagerberg, rogerlaw@swbell.net.
