QUOTES

Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshippers meeting together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be were they to become ‘unity’ conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship. ~A. W. Tozer

We look forward to being with you for worship, education, fellowship and community building this Sunday. Our scriptures are Psalm 23 and 1John 3:16-24 with a sermon entitled Reopen and Refine. For many, the 23rd Psalm runs deep and wide. It nurtures us and it challenges us to be more faithful toward one another. The letters to the early Christian churches also provide guidance and encouragement in how we love one another. We’ll take a look at some of our historic/traditional words and ways for present relevance and applicability.

If you worship at 9:30am and are planning to come to the Town Hall Meeting at noon (lunch included!) please attend Adult Education at 11:00am. (This session only is the Library) It’s a perfect day to focus on LGBTQIA since we are celebrating our 7th Anniversary being an Open & Affirming Congregation

Join us! Topics to be discussed include developing ways to continue building relationships within our church, looking for new ideas for small group opportunities, reviewing ideas for defining and displaying our church’s “identity” and brainstorming ideas to strengthen our worship services. This is your opportunity to share your suggestions to encourage the growth and spirit of Parkway. We welcome your ideas and look forward to seeing you following the worship service on April 26. If you have any questions, contact Dottie Dwyer (dkdwyer@charter.net), or any member of the Church Council.

OGHS offering to be received on May 3rd at PUCC.

One Great Hour of Sharing, as part of Our Churches Wider Mission, is the special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that carries God’s message of love and hope to people in 138 countries. The UCC works with international partners to provide sources of clean water and food, education and health care, small business micro-credit, emergency relief, and advocacy and resettlement for refugees and displaced persons. OGHS also supports domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response.
Eight Christian denominations – American Baptist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Church of the Brethren, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), Reformed Church in America, the
United Church of Christ, and Church World Service
work together to develop common promotional materials thereby sharing ideas, costs, and a commitment to faithful service.
Each denomination receives and manages its respective OGHS offerings, and together raise about $12 million each year.
More than 60 percent of the UCC’s offering supports international development initiatives, including annual support for missionaries. Currently there are 7 OGHS supported missionaries and 2 Global Mission Interns working in disaster relief, health care, education, and agricultural development. The offering funds disaster preparedness and response, and disaster related volunteer initiatives in the U.S.

A bit more of the Hamilton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) generous support of missions!

Join us this Sunday for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures are Psalm 4 and Luke 24:36b-48 with a sermon entitled Remind, Reclaim, Rebuild.

The post-resurrected Jesus comes to the disciples. They are reminded that all of the things he said and did were real. The disciples are reclaimed as belonging to this movement. “You are my witnesses – Go!” They set out to rebuild what they thought had faded away. What about us? What reminders do we need? How will we be reclaimed? What tools do we possess and which do we still need in order to rebuild?

QUOTES

How strange and wonderful is our home, our earth, with its swirling vaporous atmosphere, its flowing and frozen liquids, its trembling plants, its creeping, crawling, climbing creatures, the croaking things with wings that hang on rocks and soar through fog, the furry grass, the scaly seas… how utterly rich and wild… Yet some among us have the nerve, the insolence, the brass, the gall, to whine about the limitations of our earthbound fate and yearn for some more perfect world beyond the sky. We are none of us good enough for the world we have. ~Edward Abbey

During the recent “Jesus Has Left The Building #3″ a few of us planted snap peas and prepared beds at the Seeds of Hope Farm in Spanish Lake. This farm produces 15,000 pounds of produce on a ½ acre of ground behind St. Peters Lutheran Church in Spanish Lake MO. The farm’s main goal is to create a healthy food culture for all members of their community, especially low-income families who are often priced out of healthy fresh ingredients. A few days before we arrived, the farm’s work cart was stolen. While we were working with the farm manager, Gabriel, he showed us his unique irrigation system which strategically targets water directly to the plants.  However, the tubing for the irrigation system needs to be replaced.  If you are interested in supporting this organization, please visit their website.  They could definitely use some monetary assistance to replace their stolen and worn out equipment.www.seedsofhopefarm.org

QUOTE

“We live in a post-resurrection age, which in many ways is not unlike that of the first followers of a Galilean peasant sage and martyr, who was dead and gone for them, as well. With nothing more than variations of remembered tales of one who once lived, and died, and was no more, the dawn returns for us to look once again for what remains of his words and deeds. Once known simply as the Way, it is still a path for those who would shake the dust of arcane religious superstition off our feet and venture on into what the poet calls “the land of unlikeness,” and the man from Nazareth unceasingly sketched out for us to be the reign of God.” ~John Bennison

Worship with us these next several days!

Come alone or bring someone with you.

Thursday, April 2 | 7:00pm

Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday

commemorates the night when Jesus celebrated the Passover in Jerusalem a few days after Palm Sunday. We will celebrate the Passover with Jesus and the disciples at 7:00pm in the Gathering Space, experiencing solidarity with our ancestors in the faith. We will experience the first communion and feel deeply connected with Jesus. We will also remember the unexpected ways that Jesus loved the disciples that night and the outpouring of God’s love upon us. How does this covenant connection with God sustain us as things turn on Jesus and as things in our own lives blur our memory and drain our faith?

Friday, April 3 | noon | Historic Sanctuary

Good Friday Prayers
We will sing, pray and reflect on the intensity and importance of Good Friday. This is a contemplative worship service that will frame the day and offer great depth.

April 3 | 7:00pm | New Sanctuary

Good Friday Service
Our scriptures come from Psalm 139 and the Passion Stories in the Gospels. The Choir and Voices of Grace will sing and we will be aware of light and shadow. This is a hard and heavy night and we will relent. But it will not break us. We will find a way to redeem and rebound.

Begins Friday, April 3| 8:00pm

Easter Prayer Vigil from Good Friday through Easter Sunrise!
Keep the faith in vigil through Good Friday and Holy Saturday. While all of the 36 hours are accounted for, please choose any hour to engage in prayer. Be sure to pick up a Vigil Booklet in case you want some ideas for your sacred time. Thank you.

Sunday, April 5 | 6:00am | Elm Lawn Cemetery (Behind the Historic Sanctuary)

Easter Sunrise Service
Gathering in the darkness like the women did so long ago, we will be warmed and encouraged by the “new fire” and the sacrament of communion. The Day of Resurrection will dawn on us as we begin to see things more clearly like Mary did that early morning. They believed that all was lost, that Jesus and his mighty mission were over… but it was actually time to restart in a more compassionate and contagious way.

Sunday, April 5 | 9:30 & 11:00am

Easter Worship will immerse us in the amazing Easter story with lilies all around, snuffed candles ablaze again, fresh flowers in the cross, alleluias in the air, eager children and wide eyed teens… Come celebrate this most important day! It has been a season of re-Lent. We have been together and we have been scattered. We’ll reunite and revive our commitments. [Special Easter activities for the kids in the Fellowship Hall during the worship services…and an Easter Egg Hunt after each.]

This Sunday

It’s Palm Sunday-when Jesus and the disciples went into the City to celebrate the holy days, living out their faith and interacting with God’s people. In like fashion, we will engage in one of numerous activities to feed people, bless children, discover the stranger, provide healing, support and encourage those who are struggling, focus on personal faith journeys, honor ancestors, appreciate and enjoy nature, and much more.

Following our brief Palm Sunday Worship Service at 8:30 am, we will head off in different directions (a few choices at PUCC). In addition to various service projects, there are a few options to worship in a different context, reflecting on another tradition/culture/language during Lent and discovering ways that worshiping a higher power transcends our differences.

If you have not signed up for JHLTB3 yet, don’t fret – there’s still time! Please refer to previous email invitations and email kevin@parkwayucc.org now with your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. We will do our best to accommodate you… some of the options have limits. Thank you!

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics to serve. QUOTE

Wealth and riches; that is, an estate above what sufficeth our real occasions and necessities, is in no other sense a blessing than as it is an opportunity put into our hands, by the providence of God, of doing more good. -John Tillotson (1630-1694)

Join us on Sunday for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal Worship at 11:00am where our scripture lessons are Jeremiah 31:31-34 (being in covenant with God); Psalm 51:1-12 (God is merciful) and John 12:20-33 (what it means to follow Jesus) with a sermon entitled Reinvest and Recreate. We will extinguish another Lenten Candle. We’ll celebrate the sacrament of Baptism with Thomas Christian Osborne (Brandi and John… big brother Andrew) at 9:30am worship.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday-when Jesus and the disciples went into the City to

celebrate the holy days and live out their faith. In like fashion, we will engage in one of numerous activities to feed people, bless children, discover the stranger, provide healing, support and encourage those who are struggling, focus on personal faith journeys, honor ancestors, appreciate and enjoy nature, and much more.

Following a brief Palm Sunday Worship Service at 8:30 am, we will head off in different directions (a few choices at PUCC). In addition to various service projects, there are a few options to worship in a different context, reflecting on another tradition/culture/language during Lent and discovering ways that worshiping a higher power transcends our differences.

Be on the lookout for an email over the weekend that lists the choices for JHLTB3 – so that you will be ready to sign up in the Gathering Space this Sunday.

The Israelites, fresh from Egypt and slavery and the Red Sea, are not yet where they will settle and are frustrated and complaining. They are rebounding from a devastatingly bad experience. The Gospel Lesson celebrates Jesus as the gift of God’s love – which can be seen as a rekindling light that we allow to sometimes dim or be covered over or get lost. How do you rebound? How is Jesus the Light of the World and where does he need to be rekindled?

Greetings!

It’s the second Sunday of Lent. We are well on our way to Holy Week and Easter. It’s a full morning of worship, education, mission and fellowship at PUCC. Please join us – and consider bringing a friend or two.

Traditional Worship at 9:30am. Informal Worship at 11:00am.

Our scriptures are Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 and Mark 8:31-38 with a sermon entitled Rename and Reinvent. Abram and Sarai are renamed Abraham and Sarah as they recognize God’s call and covenant. Peter attempts to stop Jesus by scolding and correcting him but Jesus calls him off by pointing out to him that he is stuck as ‘Satan’ – thinking human and not divine thoughts. Who are we? What is our name now – and who do we want/need to be at the end of Lent? How will we get there?

We will celebrate the sacrament of communion at our open table.

We will receive your gifts of non-perishable food items for hungry neighbors.

Chili/Brownie SMACKDOWN

Sunday, March 1|10:30-12:30 pm | Fellowship Hall

The annual Chili/Brownie cook-off is coming and the pressure is building!

Plan to join us and enjoy chili and delicious brownies then vote for your favorite. The donations will benefit our youth program.

If you ordered Girl Scout cookies from one of our young PUCC ladies, they will most likely be available for pick-up in the Gathering Space on Sunday. Thank you! [If you ordered a box or two for our collegians, there will be a box there to place them in. Thx ]

You did not see Girl Scout Delaney Barclay selling cookies this winter because she is looking for your support in a different way: In early March, Delaney will be shaving her head and donating her hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. She is getting close to her goal of raising $1,000! Please consider a small donation to help her reach her goal this Sunday.

Wednesdays | 6:30-7:30pm | Snacks & Door Prizes

A great big thank you to our church family! You have been generous in giving as our youth sponsored a Souper Bowl Change Challenge. We collected $310.10! This will pay for the dinner we will provide for families at the Ronald McDonald house in April. Our Pathways of Faith sold heart rice Krispy treats for Heifer International and we collected $150.82! Thanks to all who helped! We love helping others!

Church Closing Policy

If we need to cancel church-wide activities/worship, we will communicate with you in a variety of ways:

  • Church wide email.
  • Facebook/Twitter post.
  • KSDK.com listing.
  • Voicemail at church.

Judgment whether to come to church rests with the individual. If you feel it is unsafe to drive, please don’t risk it. Stay safe. Stay home.

Dear Mona,

Join us for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal Worship at 11:00am on this first Sunday of Lent-our journey to Holy Week and Easter. Our scriptures for the day are Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm 25:1-10; and Mark 1:9-15 with a sermon Trust the Good News. The role of trust in our lives is critical. How do we trust God, self and others as we go through this season of Lent?
