Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. The question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment. ~Thích Nhất Hạnh

is preparing to have Sacred Conversations on Race in early 2015 and would like to know who is interested in attending these conversations – which will be facilitated by trained leaders.
Sacred Conversation on Race is a church-wide initiative for our United Church of Christ congregations, as we seek to confront racism in our desire to see the Church live and be as one. Dates, times and locations are yet to be determined. There is a yellow signup sheet in the Gathering Space today. Questions? Please contact Kevin at PUCC or Josh Gibson at the UCC Missouri Mid-South Conference Office at 314.918.2601 (office) or josh@mmsucc.org

Poinsettias

Please share your Christmas spirit by purchasing a beautiful poinsettia to decorate the Sanctuary this Christmas Season. A signup sheet is in the Gathering Space, where you may indicate if you would like to dedicate the flower to someone. The poinsettias may be taken home after the Christmas Eve services. (Please make out your check to PUCC with “flowers” in the memo section: $8.00 for each poinsettia.) Thank you for your support in purchasing these flowers.

Worship with us this Sunday morning – Traditional at 9:30am; Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures are Psalm 100 and Matthew 25:31-26. Please pray for our six high school sophomores who will be confirmed at the Traditional Service (Anthony, Andrew, Alek, Ian, Maya, Julia) when we will also share the sacrament of communion at our open table. At our Informal Service, we will participate in a Bibliodrama to help us reflect on the scriptures and our own lives. Join us on for worship – and invite someone to come with you!

We will receive our annual offering for ECH – Every Child’s Hope (formerly Evangelical Children’s Home or the German Orphanage). ECH was started in 1858 by Pastor Nollau – our first pastor at PUCC. Each year at Thanksgiving the kids would come and sing in our worship service and they would go back with a pick-up truck filled with all kinds of nourishment and blessing from our farms and kitchens. We continue this tradition by receiving a financial offering each year. Read about the ECH Christmas Store here…

Joke

When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past).

For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, “And all girls.”

This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?”

Her response, “Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying “All Men”!”

QUOTE

There are no shortcuts. The road cannot be made by wishing, by whining or by talking. It can be made only by walking, day after day, step by step, struggle by struggle. It’s easier, it turns out, to get people out of slavery than it is to get slavery out of people. So, people, let us walk the road – right through the middle of the desert. ~Brian McLaren

Worship with us this Sunday morning – Traditional at 9:30am; Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures are Psalm 107:1-7, 33-37 and Matthew 25:14-30 and with a sermon entitledWe Reap What We Sow. In this season of harvest, it is good for us to remember when the seeds were planted many moons ago…and all the attention and care it took for the growth and maturation to happen.

It also took grace and God’s rhythms and cycles. In today’s parable, the Master gives coins to five servants as he leaves town…Upon his return, he settles accounts with them. They had varying experiences – doing business with them or burying them. What do we do with what we have been given? What do we invest in and what do we withhold? What do you plant? What do you grow?

Neighbors in Need offering will be received this week - a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.

Worship with us this Sunday morning – Traditional at 9:30am; Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures are Psalm 78:1-7 and Matthew 25:1-13 with a sermon entitled Abundance and Scarcity. The Gospel focuses on the bridesmaids waiting with their lamps – some had enough oil, some did not.

The ones with an abundance were unable/unwilling to share because they were afraid there would not be enough for them. What is the nature of giving? What obligation, joys and pitfalls are there in sharing?

The mission of Gateway Open and Affirming (ONA) Resource Line is to serve as a resource for all people who seek a spiritual support for LGBTQIA (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Trangender/Queer or Questioning/Intersexual/Ally) individuals and their families and friends.

What led us to this? Some individuals were struggling with LGBTQIA situations and had been turned away when seeking guidance and support from their religious institutions. We felt a calling from God to provide a personal and/or anonymous telephone line to support these individuals with resources which would include the extravagant welcome of the United Church of Christ.

The Penny Paradox

Electricity can be dangerous. My nephew tried to stick a penny into a plug. Whoever said a penny does not go far didn’t see him shoot across that floor. I told him he was grounded. ~Tool Time star Tim Allen

QUOTE

Many common problems are caused by wrong attitudes. People see themselves as the center of the universe and judge everything as it relates to them. Naturally you won’t be happy that way. You can only be happy when you see things in proper perspective: all human beings are of equal importance in God’s sight, and have a job to do in the divine plan. -Peace Pilgrim

LINKS

Join us for worship this Sunday – Traditional at 9:30am and/or Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures will be Psalm 99 and Matthew 22:15-22 with a sermon entitled Flip of the Coin. The people gathered around Jesus asked him, “Should we pay taxes to Caesar or not?” What belongs to Caesar and what belongs to God? What are our priorities? Where are our allegiances? We will ponder the clash of Christ and Context and Culture.

QUOTE

Whenever you are trying to discern the will of God, quietly sense the quality of your deepest being. Wait patiently. Maybe use your active imagination to create alternative choices. Again, wait patiently. Sense whether there is peace or confusion, consolation or desolation. Then do your best and trust God. -Lowell Grisham
