Join PUCC friends for a fun night of trivia! Let’s support the important work of Neighborhood Houses and have fun while doing it! $25 per person/ $250 per table of ten RSVP to Carmen Bumgarner: cfbum@charter.net | 314-330-0813

Greetings!

It’s the second Sunday of Lent. We are well on our way to Holy Week and Easter. It’s a full morning of worship, education, mission and fellowship at PUCC. Please join us – and consider bringing a friend or two.

Traditional Worship at 9:30am. Informal Worship at 11:00am.

Our scriptures are Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 and Mark 8:31-38 with a sermon entitled Rename and Reinvent. Abram and Sarai are renamed Abraham and Sarah as they recognize God’s call and covenant. Peter attempts to stop Jesus by scolding and correcting him but Jesus calls him off by pointing out to him that he is stuck as ‘Satan’ – thinking human and not divine thoughts. Who are we? What is our name now – and who do we want/need to be at the end of Lent? How will we get there?

We will celebrate the sacrament of communion at our open table.

We will receive your gifts of non-perishable food items for hungry neighbors.

Chili/Brownie SMACKDOWN

Sunday, March 1|10:30-12:30 pm | Fellowship Hall

The annual Chili/Brownie cook-off is coming and the pressure is building!

Plan to join us and enjoy chili and delicious brownies then vote for your favorite. The donations will benefit our youth program.

If you ordered Girl Scout cookies from one of our young PUCC ladies, they will most likely be available for pick-up in the Gathering Space on Sunday. Thank you! [If you ordered a box or two for our collegians, there will be a box there to place them in. Thx ]

You did not see Girl Scout Delaney Barclay selling cookies this winter because she is looking for your support in a different way: In early March, Delaney will be shaving her head and donating her hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. She is getting close to her goal of raising $1,000! Please consider a small donation to help her reach her goal this Sunday.

Thanks to all who helped! We love helping others!

Join us for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal Worship at 11:00am on this Transfiguration Sunday – the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday and Lent – when we remember the moments when Jesus and a few disciples went up to the mountain to pray. Jesus’ students saw him join with Moses and Elijah and become dazzling white. He was transformed and so were the disciples. Our scriptures for the day are 2Kings 2:1-12; Psalm 50:1-6; Mark 9:2-9 with a sermon entitled Bright and Brighter. We all want to grow, mature, transform to become more Christ-like. Imagine gathering with some of your role models – across time and space – to have an in depth conversation and further conversion.

God wills our liberation, our exodus from Egypt. God wills our reconciliation, our return from exile. God wills our enlightenment, our seeing. God wills our forgiveness, our release from sin and guilt. God wills that we see ourselves as God’s beloved. God wills our resurrection, our passage from death to life. God wills for us food and drink that satisfy our hunger and thirst. God wills, comprehensively, our well-being-not just my well-being as an individual but the well-being of all of us and of the whole of creation. In short, God wills our salvation, our healing, here on earth. The Christian life is about participating in the salvation of God.  ~Marcus Borg

Jonah was not aligned with the culture/people of Nineveh. In fact, he wanted nothing to do with that place or its people, so he took off in the opposite direction from where God had been calling him to speak out for God. In our Gospel lesson for the day, Jesus is calling the disciples to follow him and be a part of what God is saying and doing. There is a desire to be aligned with the like-minded/hearted/spirited that hear a similar call. God invites us not to deny, deflect, delay…

Worship with us this Sunday – 9:30am Traditional and 11:00am Informal. Our scripture texts are 1Samuel 3:1-10 and John 1:43-54 with a sermon entitled Get Up and Go. The boy Samuel hears his name called a few times before he realizes it is God calling. Jesus begins to call the disciples. When do you hear your name called? What do you see that calls to you? How can we respond sooner? How can we support one another in getting up and going to where we are called?

QUOTE

To reconcile conflicting parties, we must understand the suffering of both sides. If we take sides, reconciliation is impossible. And humans want to take sides. That is why the situation gets worse and worse. People who are still available to both sides need only do one thing: go to one side and tell all about the suffering endured by the other side, and then go to the other side and tell all about the suffering endured by this side. That is our chance for peace. -Thich Nhat Hahn

QUOTE

God of our life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and weigh us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies grey and threatening; when our lives have no music in them, and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage. Flood the path with light, run our eyes to where the skies are full of promise; tune our hearts to brave music; give us the sense of comradeship with heroes and saints of every age; and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage the souls of all who journey with us on the road of life, to Your honor and glory. -St. Augustine

Winter Break! Have you ever attended the “other” worship service on Sunday morning? Since we are in AE Christmas Break this Sunday, consider attending the worship service that you do not usually attend. Bring your AE hat and compare/contrast your experiences. What do you see, hear, feel that is different from other Sundays? What is the same? See January offerings…

Prayer Updates

As we leave 2014, we pray for the grieving and for those experiencing burden and chaos. We celebrate with those in the midst of joy! We also bless our friends, family, and strangers who are in need of a fresh start at this time of year.

QUOTE

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a person starts afresh about things, she will certainly do nothing effective. -Gilbert K. Chesterton

Can you see the light and feel the warmth? Worship with us this Sunday. We’re celebrating Epiphany at 9:30am Traditional Worship and 11:00am Informal Worship. What is it about Jesus’ birth and life that draws our attention? Do others see light in and through us? Join us as we travel with the Wise Ones to be closer to Jesus. We want to understand more about who he is so we can fashion ourselves after him. Why not bring someone with you – they may want and need a fresh start on this first Sunday 2015.

We are all called to be mothers of God, for God is always waiting to be born. -Meister Eckhart

Worship with us this Sunday at our One Family Worship Service at 10:00am during the Twelve Days of Christmas (which stretches from Christmas Day until Epiphany/Three Kings Day). We’ll sing some well-known Christmas carols that we did not get to sing during Advent or Christmas Eve. The scripture lesson (Matthew 9:35-38) helps us better understand why God became Jesus. Come to celebrate the birth and life of Jesus… Emmanuel = God with us! [The kids will appreciate hearing a bit more about the dancing and milking; the birds aplenty and golden rings.]
