Currently, she is providing training to congregations and other organizations about companioning each other in grief and loss. Dorothy is a member of Epiphany UCC, St. Louis.

Quote

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation… Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation. ~Jean Arp

Join us for worship this Sunday…

We will focus on Psalm 67 and Acts 16:9-15 with a sermon entitled
Listening Heart.

Paul and other early believers were travelling, sharing Jesus along the way. They meet Lydia in Philippi. God helped her to open her heart and mind-she really listened. The Holy wants and needs us to converse with one another-mostly to listen. Join us for the sacrament of communion at our open table-and do please remember to bring gifts of non-perishable food items for those who are hungry.

PUCC 5th year anniversary of our ONA identity! (April 27, 2008) Read the April edition of Intersections for more about our Open and Affirming journey. The May edition, with a focus on Caring for Creation is also available. They are on our website with the most recent edition at the top of the page.

Joke of the week: Repair Estimate

When my printer’s type began to grow faint, I called a local repair shop where a friendly man informed me that the printer probably needed only to be cleaned. Because the store charged $50 for such cleanings, he told me, I might be better off reading the printer’s manual and trying the job myself.

Pleasantly surprised by his candor, I asked, “Does your boss know that you discourage business?”

“Actually it’s my boss’s idea,” the employee replied sheepishly. “We usually make more money on repairs if we let people try to fix things themselves first.”

As the new church began to grow, the disciples continued to be unsure of many things but were open to hearing the echoes of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. They were confronted with issues of diversity and inclusion. They listened for Jesus’ words and ways. They opened their minds and hearts to others who were different. They all grew in the faith and committed themselves to not hindering God.

Joke of the week

Bank Name Mother decided that 10-year-old Cathy should get something “practical” for her birthday.

“Suppose we open a savings account for you?” mother suggested. Cathy was delighted.

“It’s your account, darling,” mother said as they arrived at the bank, “so you fill out the application.”

Cathy was doing fine until she came to the space for “Name of your former bank.” After a slight hesitation, she put down “Piggy.”

AWOL (Adventurous Women Out Late) TONIGHT!
Friday, April 19 | 6:30pm carpool from church | AMC Creve Coeur – 7:20pm showing of 42

Come see the #1 movie in America. In 1946, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the team, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking — ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow. “Solidarity Run/Walk” tomorrow morning (April 20) in Forest Park at 8:00. It is an informal walk/run just to show solidarity with the people of Boston. It will start at the visitors Center and then circle the Park, just look for the GO! St Louis tent. We have no idea how many people will show because it has been largely word of mouth, Facebook etc. If you have yellow and/or blue please wear as they are the colors of the Boston Marathon. It should been a nice day and the Park is beautiful right now.

“Why not?” replied the curious brother.

“I took one bite and went blind for half a minute.”

Quote

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. ~Martin Luther King Jr

Worship with us this weekend at 9:30am (Traditional) or 11:00am (Informal). Our scriptures are Psalm 126 and John 12:1-8. The sermon is A New Thing.

God is always doing a new thing – and sometimes old things in new ways. Mary-Martha-Lazarus have Jesus over for dinner again – old thing. Martha prepares the meal – old thing. Mary sits with Jesus – old thing. Mary anoints Jesus with a pound of costly perfume – a new thing. Judas is upset – an old thing.

As we move toward the end of Lent and into Holy Week, what old and new ways can we come up with to honor Jesus and love the people? How do we bless others?

We will extinguish another Lenten Candle – this one for Mary, the fragrant one.

Joke of the Week

A young college co-ed came running in tears to her father. “Dad, you gave me some terrible financial advice!”

“I did? What did I tell you?” said the dad.

“You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that big bank is in trouble.”

“What are you talking about? That’s one of the largest banks in the state,” he said. “There must be some mistake.”

“I don’t think so,” she sniffed. “They just returned one of my checks with a note saying, ‘Insufficient Funds.’”

Joke of the Week

The Lord is My Shepherd

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible – Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.

Little Rico was excited about the task – but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.

On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Rico was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.”

Worship with us this weekend at 9:30am (Traditional) or 11:00am (Informal).  Join us  as we find ourselves in this second Sunday of Lent.  Our scriptures are Psalm 27 and Philippians 3:17-4:1.  We will snuff out another Lenten candle – which represent some of the individuals that affected Jesus’ identity. This one, the Psalmist, is willing to express the raw and real emotions of life. How do we allow our feelings to come the surface and inform us and others?

Musical Sundays  resume this Sunday between services for children 4 years old through 5th grade. Voices of Grace, the middle and high school choir, continues to practice at 10:45am downstairs.

This weekend is also Book Sunday. All of our children – birth through 8th grade – will receive an age appropriate book to help them in their faith journey.

Feb 17 (Part 3): Dining in the Realm of God: How Might We Recover Radical Communion Practices at PUCC? PUCC member Dr. Christopher Grundy from Eden Seminary asks: Is it possible for churches to share a ritual meal that is grounded in scripture, doesn’t focus on Jesus’ body and blood, and is still actually Holy Communion? Come share your creativity with us as we look over the ideas of the last two sessions and discuss what renewed practices of Holy Communion might look like in churches such as ours.

Joke of the Week

Ooops...

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman–already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet–who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “She’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.”

Worship with us this weekend at 9:30am (Traditional) or 11:00am (Informal). It’s the first Sunday in Lent-our journey toward Holy Week and Easter. Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16; Luke 4:1-13

The Devil Made Me Do It

Jesus is in the wilderness right after his Baptism. He is tempted by the Devil. What do we feel and believe about evil? How do we talk about it? How are we affected by the personification of evil? How do we resist it? What is the church’s role?

Lenten Candle: Tempter…tempter, distracter, obstacle, threat

We have begun our 2nd Mile Lent/Easter collection for Back Bay Mission, Heifer Project, Lydia’s House and Neighborhood Houses. We will learn more about these mission partners as the weeks go on. Please make sure to mark your gifts 2nd Mile Lent/Easter. Thank you.
