Join us this Sunday morning for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal Worship at 11:00am as we celebrate PENTECOST – the day that the Holy Spirit comes to give us memory, inspiration, immeasurable gifts, community. Our scriptures are Joel 2:28-32 and Acts 2:1-18. Please wear red as a sign of the passion and fire of the Holy Spirit! We will be surprised and bewildered as the disciples were on that amazing day … then we will find clarity for our next steps.

On this Memorial Day Weekend, as we remember the people who died while serving in our country’s armed forces, we give you the opportunity to support the ministry of Holy Joe’s Café…

Next Sunday, May 31, our next 5th Sunday, we will go back to the tree! We will worship under the giant tree on the north side of the building – more info to come! If you were with us last year, you know what a wonderful, meaningful, memorable morning it was…Don’t miss it!

Go AWOL (Adventurous Women Out Late) this Friday night! We will be seeing the film Far from the Madding Crowd at Des Peres Theater – and then chat about it over ice cream! Meet us at church at 6:30pm or at the theater at 6:45pm Please RSVP to Carmen Bumgarner 314-330-0813 cfbum@charter.net

It’s Ascension Sunday! Join us for Traditional Worship at 9:30am and/or Informal Worship at 11:00am where our scriptures are Psalm 47 and Luke 24:44-53 with a sermon entitled Witnesses. The disciples and the post-resurrected Jesus are together in person for the last time – as he ascends to heaven. He opens their minds to understand the scriptures. He commissions them to go far and wide to teach and preach. He reminds them that they will be given the power they need to do this!

You don’t want to miss Informal Worship at 11:00am where we will celebrate and give thanks for Jay-B Saffold, our Music Director, on his final Sunday with us. After partnering these fourteen months, we have discerned together that we need to go our separate ways. Jay-B will seek experiences where his amazing skills can be better utilized. Via the nonprofit he founded soon after moving here from Michigan in late 2013, Jay-B is moving ahead with plans to start an arts and music program for kids. He will be dedicating his time to bringing more attention to his original art and providing performance opportunities for teens and young adults interested in entertaining for a living. That will include piano and individual voice lessons. He is also producing The Wiz and a brand new musical called The Haunted Pool this fall, all in hopes to provide consistent opportunities for aspiring performers. Jay-B’s passion for the church and the arts has been an inspiration. He has also recently begun training with Noodles & Company to become an Assistant Manager of a brand new store that will open this summer.

As we revitalize the Informal Service, we will assess our human, financial and equipment resources. Exciting new things are brewing through the Strengthening Worship Action Plan that you will see this summer. We would like 2-3 more people to be a part of the Informal Worship Team. Interested? Just let us know. For the time being, we are securing substitute pianists to lead us at 11am.

Please pray that we are all open to the Spirit now and into the future.

OGHS offering to be received this Sunday at PUCC

One Great Hour of Sharing, as part of Our Churches Wider Mission, is the special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that carries God’s message of love and hope to people in 138 countries. The UCC works with international partners to provide sources of clean water and food, education and health care, small business micro-credit, emergency relief, and advocacy and resettlement for refugees and displaced persons.

OGHS also supports domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response (eg. earthquakes in Nepal)

Eight Christian denominations – American Baptist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Church of the Brethren, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), Reformed Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and Church World Service work together to develop common promotional materials thereby sharing ideas, costs, and a commitment to faithful service.

Each denomination receives and manages its respective OGHS offerings, and together raise about $12 million each year.

More than 60% of the UCC’s offering supports international development initiatives, including annual support for missionaries.

Currently there are 7 OGHS supported missionaries and 2 Global Mission Interns working in disaster relief, health care, education, and agricultural development.

The offering funds disaster preparedness and response, and disaster related volunteer initiatives in the U.S.

QUOTES

Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshippers meeting together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be were they to become ‘unity’ conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship. ~A. W. Tozer

We look forward to being with you for worship, education, fellowship and community building this Sunday. Our scriptures are Psalm 23 and 1John 3:16-24 with a sermon entitled Reopen and Refine. For many, the 23rd Psalm runs deep and wide. It nurtures us and it challenges us to be more faithful toward one another. The letters to the early Christian churches also provide guidance and encouragement in how we love one another. We’ll take a look at some of our historic/traditional words and ways for present relevance and applicability.

If you worship at 9:30am and are planning to come to the Town Hall Meeting at noon (lunch included!) please attend Adult Education at 11:00am. A bit more of the Hamilton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) generous support of missions!

Join us this Sunday for Traditional Worship at 9:30am or Informal at 11:00am. Our scriptures are Psalm 4 and Luke 24:36b-48 with a sermon entitled Remind, Reclaim, Rebuild.

The post-resurrected Jesus comes to the disciples. They are reminded that all of the things he said and did were real. The disciples are reclaimed as belonging to this movement. “You are my witnesses – Go!” They set out to rebuild what they thought had faded away. What about us? What reminders do we need? How will we be reclaimed? What tools do we possess and which do we still need in order to rebuild?

QUOTES

How strange and wonderful is our home, our earth, with its swirling vaporous atmosphere, its flowing and frozen liquids, its trembling plants, its creeping, crawling, climbing creatures, the croaking things with wings that hang on rocks and soar through fog, the furry grass, the scaly seas… how utterly rich and wild… Yet some among us have the nerve, the insolence, the brass, the gall, to whine about the limitations of our earthbound fate and yearn for some more perfect world beyond the sky. We are none of us good enough for the world we have. ~Edward Abbey

The earth may be our mother but we can be her mid-wife or her funeral director. ~unknown

LIFE BURSTS FORTH! The Easter story continues! Hear what happens in the Gospels after that Easter morning!

Encourage youth! It’s one of the most important things we can do in the church.

Please make special efforts to be with us this Sunday at 9:30am or 11am when our children and youth will lead us in a worship service filled with music, drama and dance — “Life Bursts Forth”.

It will be a meaningful and memorable morning. You will have a hard time deciding which piece of the worship service was most inspiring and uplifting.

Don’t miss the kids bell choir; Q Watkins’ cello solo; Blake Lyons’ message; the short skit “Why is My Flat, Flat?”; Delaney Barclay and Iris Cameron on the piano; Voices of Grace and much more.

Our youth need you and we need them! See you on Sunday! Bring a friend, relative, neighbor with you.

Town Hall Meeting Sunday, April 26

Sunday, April 26 | 12:00-1:30pm | Fellowship Hall

During the recent “Jesus Has Left The Building #3″ a few of us planted snap peas and prepared beds at the Seeds of Hope Farm in Spanish Lake. This farm produces 15,000 pounds of produce on a ½ acre of ground behind St. Peters Lutheran Church in Spanish Lake MO. The farm’s main goal is to create a healthy food culture for all members of their community, especially low-income families who are often priced out of healthy fresh ingredients. A few days before we arrived, the farm’s work cart was stolen. While we were working with the farm manager, Gabriel, he showed us his unique irrigation system which strategically targets water directly to the plants.  However, the tubing for the irrigation system needs to be replaced.  If you are interested in supporting this organization, please visit their website.  They could definitely use some monetary assistance to replace their stolen and worn out equipment.www.seedsofhopefarm.org

Jesus’s resurrection is the beginning of God’s new project not to snatch people away from earth to heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord’s Prayer is about. ~N.T. Wright

QUOTE

“We live in a post-resurrection age, which in many ways is not unlike that of the first followers of a Galilean peasant sage and martyr, who was dead and gone for them, as well. With nothing more than variations of remembered tales of one who once lived, and died, and was no more, the dawn returns for us to look once again for what remains of his words and deeds. Once known simply as the Way, it is still a path for those who would shake the dust of arcane religious superstition off our feet and venture on into what the poet calls “the land of unlikeness,” and the man from Nazareth unceasingly sketched out for us to be the reign of God.” ~John Bennison

Worship with us these next several days!

Come alone or bring someone with you.

Thursday, April 2 | 7:00pm

Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday

commemorates the night when Jesus celebrated the Passover in Jerusalem a few days after Palm Sunday. We will celebrate the Passover with Jesus and the disciples at 7:00pm in the Gathering Space, experiencing solidarity with our ancestors in the faith. We will experience the first communion and feel deeply connected with Jesus. We will also remember the unexpected ways that Jesus loved the disciples that night and the outpouring of God’s love upon us. How does this covenant connection with God sustain us as things turn on Jesus and as things in our own lives blur our memory and drain our faith?

Friday, April 3 | noon | Historic Sanctuary

Good Friday Prayers
We will sing, pray and reflect on the intensity and importance of Good Friday. This is a contemplative worship service that will frame the day and offer great depth.

April 3 | 7:00pm | New Sanctuary

Good Friday Service
Our scriptures come from Psalm 139 and the Passion Stories in the Gospels. The Choir and Voices of Grace will sing and we will be aware of light and shadow. This is a hard and heavy night and we will relent. But it will not break us. We will find a way to redeem and rebound.

Begins Friday, April 3| 8:00pm

Easter Prayer Vigil from Good Friday through Easter Sunrise!
Keep the faith in vigil through Good Friday and Holy Saturday. While all of the 36 hours are accounted for, please choose any hour to engage in prayer. Be sure to pick up a Vigil Booklet in case you want some ideas for your sacred time. Thank you.

Sunday, April 5 | 6:00am | Elm Lawn Cemetery (Behind the Historic Sanctuary)

Easter Sunrise Service
Gathering in the darkness like the women did so long ago, we will be warmed and encouraged by the “new fire” and the sacrament of communion. The Day of Resurrection will dawn on us as we begin to see things more clearly like Mary did that early morning. They believed that all was lost, that Jesus and his mighty mission were over… but it was actually time to restart in a more compassionate and contagious way.

Sunday, April 5 | 9:30 & 11:00am

Easter Worship will immerse us in the amazing Easter story with lilies all around, snuffed candles ablaze again, fresh flowers in the cross, alleluias in the air, eager children and wide eyed teens… Come celebrate this most important day! It has been a season of re-Lent. We have been together and we have been scattered. We’ll reunite and revive our commitments. [Special Easter activities for the kids in the Fellowship Hall during the worship services…and an Easter Egg Hunt after each.]

This Sunday

It’s Palm Sunday-when Jesus and the disciples went into the City to celebrate the holy days, living out their faith and interacting with God’s people. In like fashion, we will engage in one of numerous activities to feed people, bless children, discover the stranger, provide healing, support and encourage those who are struggling, focus on personal faith journeys, honor ancestors, appreciate and enjoy nature, and much more.

Following our brief Palm Sunday Worship Service at 8:30 am, we will head off in different directions (a few choices at PUCC). In addition to various service projects, there are a few options to worship in a different context, reflecting on another tradition/culture/language during Lent and discovering ways that worshiping a higher power transcends our differences.

If you have not signed up for JHLTB3 yet, don’t fret – there’s still time! Please refer to previous email invitations and email kevin@parkwayucc.org now with your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. We will do our best to accommodate you… some of the options have limits. Thank you!

QUOTE

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. ~Martin Luther King Jr
