Stewardship Message
Please ask your broker to notify the church office when a stock contribution is given. This assures the stock contribution can be sold in a timely manner. In addition, notify Cindy with information about recording the contribution in the General Fund, the Building Fund, or Other funds. When contributions to be Deferred are given at year-end, please make a notation stating the contribution is to be Deferred to the following year’s pledge.

Rehearsals for Annual Christmas Pageant
One of the most anticipated and special events of the year is coming to Parkway UCC on December 16, 2012. The children of our church are getting ready for our Traditional Annual Christmas Pageant. This year, it is Not So Silent Night, a play about three shepherds being accused of disturbing the peace. From the senior high students to the pre-school excitement is growing on who will get to be the judge, witnesses, shepherds, angels, and Mary and Joseph. Come join us on Dec. 2 as we pick parts and costumes. There will be 2 mandatory rehearsals for speaking parts, December 9 during Sunday School at 9:30 and Saturday, December 15.

Prom Committee Needed
PUCC is hosting our very own prom (for all ages) on Saturday, February 9. Just like in high school, we need a committee to plan this magical evening. We seek volunteers from a variety of age groups so this prom has something for everyone. This will not be a big time commitment. Enthusiasm is a must!

Fair Trade Chocolate TODAY: We are selling Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee, as well as CHOCOLATE today and November 10. Look for the table in the Gathering Space between services. This social justice enterprise helps small farmers in developing regions to have a fairer way to market their produce in competition with the large multinationals. The labor for the production of these products is not exploited—especially in the chocolate market. We have quality products for just a little more that the mass-marketed Folgers, etc. and can feel virtuous and helpful as we sip (or munch). See you at church. SS

Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power – And How They Can Be Restored by Marcus Borg.

In the 4th century, Christianity began to focus largely on the afterlife and the post-mortem fate of people. But Christianity’s initial focus was on compassion and God’s dream for a just and peaceful world in the here and now. Unfortunately, this original interpretation of the Bible has been overshadowed by “heaven and hell Christianity.” As Borg illustrates, modern Christianity has lost its transformative power because of a literalism that has impoverished the meaning of the Bible and a consequent misunderstanding of Christianity’s core ideas.

On Sunday, May 27, Christian Services Commission will be asking you to support Holy Joe’s Café, a coffee house ministry which is conducted by military chaplains in the Middle East. These “coffee houses” are places where the troops can come to relax and get away from the war for a while, get a good cup of coffee, and talk with a chaplain in a casual setting. Child Care Position Opening
We are presently seeking a part time child care provider. Our current provider is graduating from college and will be leaving us.

We are seeking someone to begin this summer to overlap with our current provider for training. The individual should be 18 years of age or older, reliable and enjoy working with children. The position would be for 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings for TED (6-8:00 PM; sometimes 8:30 or 9:00 on CE meeting nights); and for every Wed night during choir practice.  In addition, our current provider often filled in on various other nights or weekends when a committee called her for childcare. She usually had a variety of ages of kids for the evening babysitting (ranging from 0-10 or so). She used various rooms in the church depending on the age of the children she had and room availability. If no children were there for babysitting, she would leave by 7:00 on those nights but she was paid for the 2 hour time frame. She also filled in for Melissa on Sunday mornings when needed, and Melissa would fill in for her on weeknights when needed. She also helped with various summer events such as babysitting in the nursery during VBS.

Parkway’s One Family Retreat at Camp Mo-Val:
Friday April 13 from 2:00pm until 2:30pm Saturday April 14
Cost: $28/adult, $22/child ages 4-11; $8/child ages 0-3
We will share in food cost as well.
Join in the Spring time fun with a hayride, boating, hiking, games and songs. Saturday morning we will donate a few hours to help “spruce up” Mo Val in preparation for the upcoming camps. PUCC Spring Workday

Tasks include planting flowers, raking, cleaning out closets, cleaning vents and window air-conditioner filters, and any other projects that can be suggested. Lunch with Sloppy Joe sandwiches will be served at 12:00pm. Childcare from 9:00am-12:00pm. Sign up on the poster in the Gathering Space for helping or providing items for lunch.

 

Youth to Go to City Museum April 27

The next Middle High and Senior High combined outing will be Friday Night April 27 to the City Museum. Cost is $12 (the church will cover half for any who go). There is a nice discount for all if 15 or more reserve in advance so please let Pastor Todd know if you are going. We’ll gather at Parkway UCC and leave at 6:45pm.

 

Any green thumbs out there? The begonia wand has been passed down from Judy Schanbacher and we need someone to step into her shoes. She and Rich have graciously sent money to cover the project. Please contact Carol Cobb 965-4147 or ccjcobb@aol.com

 

CERT Classes [Citizens Emergency Response Team]

A government sponsored training program of 20 hours teaching how to respond in a community emergency. Classes are given by local police and fire fighters and a session will start May 6 at Mason and Manchester. Trained church members would be a nice addition to our church that serves as a potential shelter in case of  emergency. Sign up on the bulletin board in the gathering space. Questions? PUCC Spring Workday

Weather permitting we will be planting flowers in the front of the church, thanks to the generosity of Judy and Rich Schanbacher. Other tasks will be raking the prayer garden, cleaning out closets of unnecessary items, cleaning vents and window air-conditioner filters, and any other projects that can be suggested. Easter Flowers Purchase a lovely Easter Lily or a beautiful hanging basket of Boston Fern to decorate the sanctuary this Easter. A signup sheet is in the gathering space. You make take the flowers home after the Easter services, or they may be donated to the sick or shut-ins of our congregation. Please make your check payable to PUCC, noting on your check “for Easter flowers.” ($9.00 per lily; $13.00 per basket of ferns). Thank you. -The Sanctuary Committee
