Not Just for Men will be visiting The Hawken House located in Webster Groves, 1155 South Rock Hill Road

The Historic Christopher Hawken House is the oldest house in suburban Webster Groves. Christopher Miller Hawken built this elegant Federal/Greek Revival style farmhouse in 1857 for his bride, Mary Ann Kinkead Eads. The house originally stood on Big Bend Boulevard along Grant Road, and was moved to Southwest Park in 1970 in order to preserve the structure. It was the first home in Missouri to receive federal funds for restoration, which matched the amount raised by the citizens of Webster Groves and is listed on the National Historic Register. It is now maintained and operated by the Webster Groves Historical Society. The charge for the tour is $4.00 for adults. We will visit a fine dining establishment after touring the house. RSVP Harold Cobb at 965-4147 or email ccjcobb@aol.com.

RECAP: Recycling Center Tour 9/14

9/27 UPDATE

Recycling Center Tour Recap

Parkway Sustainability Seekers and the Not Just for Men Group joined forces on September 14th for a tour of the Republic Services recycling center in Hazelwood. Twenty people attended the event, which was followed by lunch.

The take-away from our tour is that far more is recyclable than we realized and “when in doubt, recycle it,” is a helpful motto. Some facts we learned include:

  • Glass needs 1-2 million years to decompose in a landfill and when recycled, is back on the shelf in 30 days.
  • Yeah! – It is not necessary to thoroughly wash out aluminum or tinned steel cans. Just put the lid inside the can and recycle.
  • The paper recycling done at this plant alone saves more than 1 million trees a year.
  • Put the lids on plastic bottles and milk cartons before recycling, as the lids can clog or damage their machinery.

Our group asked what the best choice was for hot beverages at our fellowship time. The answer was unequivocally “MUGS.” Later this fall the Sustainability Seekers will begin selling Fair Trade coffee and chocolate to raise funds towards both mugs and a dishwasher for the coffee nook.
